Is the Stock Market Open on Columbus Day 2019?
Table of Contents
Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Whichever you call it, most of Wall Street will be at work during it, even if you aren’t.
The stock market will indeed be open during normal hours on Monday, Oct. 11, for Columbus Day, which is increasingly being recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In fact, the new moniker enjoyed a fresh milestone this year, as President Joe Biden became the first president to issue a proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
“Today, we recognize Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society,” Biden wrote in the proclamation.
That said, a few Wall Streeters will have the day off. That’s because the bond market will be closed on Columbus Day. Bond trading resumes, as usual, on Tuesday, Oct. 12, which is also when the corporate earnings calendar will start hopping with third-quarter reports.

Stock Market Holiday Observations
When it comes to the stock and bond markets alike, if a holiday falls on a weekend, market closures are dictated by two rules:
- If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the market will close on the preceding Friday.
- If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the market will close on the subsequent Monday.
Stock and Bond Market Hours
The “core trading” stock market hours for the NYSE and Nasdaq are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. However, both exchanges offer premarket trading hours between 4 and 9:30 a.m., as well as late trading hours between 4 and 8 p.m.
Bond markets typically trade between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The stock markets close at 1 p.m. on early-closure days; bond markets close early at 2 p.m.
